The social science concentration focuses on the economic, political, psychological, and sociological impact of humans on the environment.
You may choose to examine the issue through one of these subjects or a combination of them.
The main purpose is to examine the topic through a social science lens to enhance understanding and propose real solutions.
Examples of possible topics related to the social sciences:
- Impact of environmental education
- Role of sustainability initiatives
- Role of each person's everyday decisions that affect the environment
- Impact of environmental policy and economics
- Health-related issues pertaining to environmental issues - such as clean water and clean air
- Impact of COVID-19 on women in the workforce
- How environmental concerns may impact people differently based on socioeconomic status
- Impact of a clean and healthy environment on mental health due (anxiety, depression, mindfulness, exercise)
- Effects of environmental health on children and/or the elderly
- Role race/ethnicity plays as related to environmental concerns and sustainability
- Vaccine hesitancy (polls suggest a sizable proportion of the U.S. population doesn’t plan to receive the vaccine or is unsure about receiving it)
- Impact of economic environmental decisions on small businesses
- Impact of the environmental policy on politics in the U.S. (politics and health)

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides substantive support and capacity-building for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their related thematic issues, including water, energy, climate, oceans, urbanization, transport, science and technology, the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), partnerships and Small Island Developing States.
