SSC College Libraries Annual Review 2022-23

Director's Introduction

The 2022-23 academic year was another highly productive year for the Seminole State College Libraries.  Library faculty and staff served a large number of students, faculty, and staff across the college, at all campuses and online.  Library users took advantage of new electronic resources, expanded opportunities to interact with librarians, and a host of new co-curricular programming opportunities.  Students continued to depend on the library for access to full-term laptop loaners, 24/7 chat with professional librarians, and weekend hours to focus on academic work.

In addition to providing quality resources, spaces, services, and experiences day in and day out, the College Libraries also continued work on three major initiatives, closely connected to the college's priorities and strategic plan:

  • Measuring Information Literacy Outcomes: the library faculty piloted a process in the First Year Experience course to assess the attainment of the collegewide student learning outcome on Information Literacy through a specific assignment and grading rubric utilizing the Canvas Outcomes tool.  The library is the first academic department on campus to explore the utility of this tool, and it is believed that the pilot program will be influential in guiding other departments in the successful assessment of the six other collegewide student learning outcomes.
  • Equipping Library Staff for Referrals:  In the post-pandemic environment, many students continue to leverage online platforms to engage with the library, particularly through the library's chat service.  During this past year library faculty and staff began a project to develop a more structured training process to ensure that all frontline library team members are confident in how to assist students, whether in person or online, and provide seamless referrals to other service points within the library or external service points across the college.
  • Partnering on Programming:  This past year saw great success in the growth and development of the library's co-curricular programming offerings, as other departments piloted collaborative events that yielded great attendance and positive feedback.  Two notable examples are the establishment of the library as the site for the annual Honors Program Poster Presentation, and the initiation of weekly events at the library, hosted by the Office of Student Life and the Career Development Center.

As we reflect on these impactful achievements in 2022-23, the entire library team is excited about the new horizons that may be reached in the upcoming year!
